The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), invite applications for a 3-year postdoctoral position in the area of sustainability assessment, manufacturing and product LCA, prospective LCA. The position will support two innovation centered projects. The Horizon Europe project ARMS (www.arms-project.eu/), which aims to develop new eco-friendly supercapacitors as alternative to specific battery applications, and the Danish Innovation project REVIVE which will explore the advantages of local circular ecosystems for high values steel alloys. The candidate will be part of two project networks, which include academic partners among which Danish Technical University, Tampere University, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), University of Latvia, and companies among which LEGO, Asgaard Metals, Lynxdrone can be mentioned here.
The position is located at SDU Life Cycle Engineering, a section of the Department of Green Technology. Starting date is latest September 1st, 2024, in Odense, Denmark.
Job description and responsibilities
The Postdoc will contribute to research and publications in the two associated innovation projects. In ARMS, the role of SDU is to ensure the environmental sustainability of technology and products developed during the project. This entails the advance and use of the Safe and Sustainable by Design framework as well as product LCAs. In REVIVE, the role of SDU is to model and assess the sustainability of new proposed circular ecosystems for metals. Among other, this includes the development of life cycle inventories, mapping manufacturing systems, and advancing the coupling of LCA and metallurgical models. The position does not include teaching duties but may include supervision of master students connected to the projects.
Qualifications:
As formal qualification, you must hold a PhD preferably in Industrial Ecology, Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, or Environmental Engineering. An associated track record of publications in the field/s is expected.
Main qualifications for the position include life-cycle assessment models, collection and analysis of quantitative data. Excellence in presentation and writing skills, as well as fluence in English are required.
Specific knowledge in sustainability, risk assessment methods, circular economy product manufacturing, and data science will be considered an advantage. Other desirable experience is cross-cultural and interdisciplinary research projects, preferably in European environments.

About SDU Life Cycle Engineering
SDU Life Cycle Engineering is focused on science and engineering research addressing resources, built environment and technology pathways to support sustainability transitions. The group employs quantitative systems analysis and industrial ecology methods, such as Life Cycle Assessment, Materials Flow Analysis, environmentally extended Input-Output Analysis, resource criticality assessment, Energy System Analysis, and socio-economic assessment.
The Department of Green Technology is located in Odense, the main campus of the University of Southern Denmark. Odense is a fast-growing international community with an open Scandinavian culture, affordable housing and living costs.
Conditions of employment
Employment as a postdoc requires scientific qualifications at PhD level. Employment as a postdoc is temporary and will cease without further notice at the end of the period.
Research will be predominant in the position. Teaching assignments can be agreed individually. Furthermore, other types of assignments may occur to a limited degree. The Faculty determines the distribution of the various assignments. The weighting of the different assignments may vary over time.
