The Department of Biology, University of Southern Denmark, invites applications for a 3-year postdoc position within the field of nature-based restoration and sustainable management, aimed at improving the ecological state and biodiversity of temperate freshwater habitats and their catchments.
The Department of Biology covers biology broadly, including ecology, ecotoxicology, bioacoustics, physiology, biodemography, biogeochemistry, and Earth evolution. We welcome applicants who are prepared to participate in cross-disciplinary cooperation with the department. The applicant will be part of the Ecology group https://www.sdu.dk/en/forskning/ecology.
The successful applicant is expected to have a research background in basic and/or applied research related to systems ecology, with a focus on sediment and soil phosphorus and carbon transport and turnover between lakes and wetlands and terrestrial environments, as well as on major organism groups (fish and macrophytes) associated with these habitats. The position will primarily involve pre- and post-monitoring of state-of-the-art conventional restoration approaches and the development of sustainable, nature-based restoration approaches. Furthermore, a strong background in measurement techniques for greenhouse gas production and emission dynamics, as well as experience working with the ecophysiology of freshwater fish populations, is a strong asset.
The position involves teaching responsibilities in freshwater ecology, as well as supervision at the bachelor’s and master’s levels. Teaching experience, project management, and project communication related to freshwater ecology to a broad audience will therefore be considered an advantage.
Appointment as a postdoctoral researcher presupposes scientific qualifications corresponding to the requirements of the position at the university level. The applicant is expected to hold a PhD, demonstrate scientific innovation and excellence, publish research outcomes in international peer-reviewed journals, and have experience in teaching, supervision, and research funding applications.
The successful candidate will have access to a well-developed research infrastructure, including laboratory space, shared field equipment, and modern core facilities such as imaging and computational resources. The department offers a research climate characterized by lively, open, and critical academic discussion within and across different fields, as well as a strong network of early-career scientists.
Research activities will be evaluated based on actual research time. Applicants are therefore encouraged to specify periods of leave without research activities so these periods can be excluded when evaluating scientific productivity.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a complete list of publications, copies of all publications they wish to be considered, a teaching portfolio, and a brief overview of their most important research results and research plans for the next 3 years.
A valid driver’s license is required for this position, and experience with sailing and sampling from boats is a strong advantage.
Application deadline: 16th of February 2026 at 23:59 hours local Danish time
