BEMÆRK: Ansøgningsfristen er overskredet
The Algae Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology group, led by Associate Prof. Michele Fabris, at the SDU Department of Green Technology (IGT), invites applications for a 1.5-year postdoc position in algae molecular bioengineering and synthetic biology. This position is funded by the EU Horizon Program project AquaBioSens, which aims at improving water quality surveillance and early warning of water-borne threats to the environment, food industry and human health.
Flexible start date, between 1st March and 1st June 2024.
The research group and the research environment
In the Algae Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology group we have a strong focus on understanding the molecular and genetic basis of algal biology. We translate this fundamental knowledge into the development of novel algae strains with enhanced or new traits that have industrial and commercial applications. Our laboratories are equipped for molecular and cell biology and algal cultivation, and we have access to cutting-edge bioimaging and analytical chemistry facilities within IGT and SDU.
The research group is part of SDU Biotechnology a multidisciplinary research division within IGT dedicated to developing innovative, sustainable solutions from biological systems to provide food, feed, chemicals, clean environment and renewable energy.
The research environment is diverse, multicultural, and inclusive, and prioritizes equality in all its activities. As such, applications for this position are encouraged from candidates of any cultural background and gender.
The position
You will join a passionate and international team deeply engaged in understanding and engineering the biology of algae to provide bio-based, sustainable solutions for the environment and industry. Here, you will carry out creative, innovative and collaborative high-impact research. You will have access to SDU’s training opportunities, and you will be involved in graduate and undergraduate student guidance.
The project
You will work on an exciting and challenging project aimed at designing, engineering and prototyping biosensor circuits in diatoms to monitor the presence of pollutants in water samples as an alternative to complex, costly and laborious laboratory-based methods. You will employ molecular, systems and synthetic biology to answer impactful fundamental research questions and to design and engineer new algal strains as biological devices. The project aims at developing cutting-edge new algal-based technologies and is embedded in a broader international collaboration consortium which includes academic and industrial partners.
Requirements:
- PhD in molecular biology, synthetic biology, or biotechnology.
- Strong motivation and research interests in synthetic biology, microalgae biology and biotechnology.
- Demonstrated, hands-on experience in algae, plant or micro-eukaryotes molecular biology, genetic engineering, or synthetic biology.
- Experience in designing and assembling multi-gene DNA constructs and/or genome editing.
- Experience in transcriptomics data analysis, bioinformatics, and computational skills complementary to wet-lab research, data analysis and visualization (RNA seq data analysis workflows, R, Python).
- Demonstrated capacity to independently design, plan and drive research projects, and to solve scientific problems creatively.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Demonstrated capacity to work as part of a team and foster collaboration.
