The Digital Democracy Center invites applications for a 3-year position as PhD Student at the intersection of Business Administration and Computer Science for a project on Designing Climate DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations). The position is vacant from October 1st or soon after. The position is located in Odense.

Job description

Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) are member-owned communities operated by a decentralized computer program, in which decision making and financing are handled through a blockchain. These organizations offer a transparent and efficient mechanism for resource management and decision making, which could hold considerable potential for addressing climate change. This could be realized through activities such as directly investing in mitigation projects, managing carbon markets, funding community-based adaptation initiatives, or ensuring sustainable practices. Moreover, by providing a platform for more equitable participation and consensus, DAOs can bolster democracy by decentralizing decision-making authority, ultimately enhancing the legitimacy of decisions made.

The proposed PhD project will delve into the potential of DAOs as a novel approach to organizing collaboration in the realm of climate action. Specifically, the project will examine how the design of smart contracts – computer programs or transaction protocols that automatically execute, control, or document events and actions – may empower Climate DAOs to incorporate governance matters and ethical considerations. Specific focus areas could be, but are not limited to, automated compliance, incentives for environment-friendly behavior, enforcing penalties for harmful behavior, or the promotion of transparency and ethical practices within supply chains.

From a methodological standpoint, one potential approach could involve exploring the adaptation and application of techniques established in computer science for understanding and designing distributed systems – especially from the areas of concurrency, programming languages, formal methods, and optimization – to understanding and designing Climate DAOs. Another approach could be to formulate and describe comprehensive use cases of Climate DAOs.

The ideal candidate will have an interdisciplinary background in either Business Administration or Economics, ideally with computer science proficiency, including programming experience. Alternatively, a background in Business Information Systems or Computer Science with a firm understanding of organization theory and organization design would be beneficial. The candidate should have a keen interest in blockchain technologies, smart contracts, and decentralized autonomous organizations. Prior knowledge of these subjects is advantageous but not required.
