About the job
The Department of Oncology at Odense University Hospital (OUH) and the Department of Clinical Research at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) offer a 3-year PhD scholarship as a data scientist in the recently funded Danish Head and Neck cancer group FORWARD project. The FORWARD project aims to harvest data from radiotherapy-treated head and neck cancer patients across Denmark through the national radiotherapy data infrastructure. Through AI and machine learning, you will use the data to build prediction models for survival changes and risk of side effects.
You will be working with topics like:
- Data harvesting methods
- Development and use of AI in research
- Federated learning methods
- Machine learning tools to build prediction models
- Your next great idea!
Your qualifications
As you will work closely with fellow PhD students and colleagues from several specialities, we seek someone with great collaboration skills.
Furthermore, we expect that you:
- Hold a master’s degree in programming, physics, engineering, data science or related fields.
- Have an interest in health data science.
- Have knowledge of some of the following fields: database harvesting, image processing, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.
- Are proficient in English – both written and verbal
Meet the team
As our new PhD student, you will join our multidisciplinary team of PhD students, medical physicists, computer scientists, medical doctors, and professors at OUH. Furthermore, you will be a part of a small national team of 5-10 data scientists and developers working on the Danish national infrastructure for radiotherapy, DESIRE group. Social activities and the flexibility to design a working day that matches our personal preferences are essential to an enjoyable work-life in both groups. We enjoy a flat organizational hierarchy and the right to make mistakes and learn from them. Ultimately, we are all just nerds who want to make a difference.

Interviews will be held two weeks later.
Position will start early 2024, clinical assistance and transition over into a PhD fellowship, after approved project description at the Faculty of Health Siciences at SDU.
