The Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy (FKF) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant or associate professor level within the research areas of astrophysics, gravity and/or cosmology.

FKF is one of four departments at the Faculty of Science, SDU, located in Odense. The physics section at FKF is focused on basic research within the areas of astrophysics, gravity, cosmology, fundamental physics, biophysics, and computational physics. The section is part of a broader SDU physics research environment across several faculties.

The ambition of the department is to carry out world-class research within the above-mentioned research fields. The applicant is expected to expand and complement our current activities in, and at the interface of cosmology, gravity, astrophysics or particle physics. We are seeking to appoint an assistant professor or an associate professor that will have the ability to play an active role in international and/or national collaborative projects and thereby strengthen SDU's visibility.

The candidate must have a proven track record of high quality international scientific publications and a track record of attracting research funding and management of research projects as well as the potential to attract significant research funding within the Danish and EU funding landscape.

The department is responsible for educations in physics as well as in chemistry and pharmacy. The ambition of the department is to significantly strengthen the physics education in fundamental physics, astrophysics and cosmology at the master level. We therefore expect that the applicant is an inspiring mentor for students.

Requirements and qualifications
The position requires research experience within one or several of the areas of astrophysics, gravity, cosmology and must also hold a PhD within these or related areas. The ideal candidate is expected to have most of the following documented qualifications within astrophysics, gravity and/or cosmology:

  • Experience with studying general relativistic effects in astrophysics/cosmology.
  • Experience with numerical astrophysics/gravity/cosmology such as simulations.
  • Experience with analytical and numerical aspects of astronomical probes such as ray tracing and/or gravitational waves.

Teaching experience within astrophysics, cosmology and/or fundamental physics and/or related areas is expected at associate professor level but is not a strict requirement at assistant professor level.

The successful candidate is furthermore expected to have:

  • Excellent English skills (written and spoken).
  • Ability to work independently and be the driving force behind a research team.
  • A teaching portfolio in physics and experience with independently supervising students. The latter is a requirement for applicants at associate professor level but not necessarily at the assistant professor level.

Additionally, a strong record in public involvement is considered an advantage but not a requirement.

Application deadline: 4 November 2024 and starting 1. January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.
