The Centre of Maritime Health and Society, Department of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark in Esbjerg, invites applications for a tenured position as Senior Researcher.
Applicants with a background in sociology, anthropology, psychology, or health disciplines, or areas of research such as occupational safety and health, will be preferred.
The position is vacant from November 1, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.
Research environment
The Centre of Maritime Health and Society (CMSS) was established in 1992 and offers a broad cross-disciplinary research environment. It is our aim to create high-quality research which is relevant to the maritime industry and which contributes to and competes with international maritime research. There are currently eleven employees, all of whom work within research disciplines relating to health and safety in the maritime domain. CMSS is currently revising its Strategy Plan 2020-2024, which includes efforts to maintain the Centre’s position of having publications with a strong impact in maritime research internationally and in Denmark, and close relations to stakeholders within the offshore, fisheries and shipping sectors.
CMSS has good relations with the Unit for Health Promotion Research and the Department of Sociology, Environmental and Business Economy, all of which are located on the university’s Esbjerg campus. CMSS has recently received a very positive external evaluation, and we will continue to build on this and the recommendations for further development.
Responsibilities and tasks
The candidate will perform research, apply for research funding and share other responsibilities in the Centre. The candidate will also engage in teaching activities and training of the next generation of researchers. It is the intention that the candidate can contribute with design, implementation, evaluation and analysis of occupational health and intervention, work environments and their improvements in collaboration with organizations and companies, and other relevant stakeholders. Contribution to developing policy instruments will be seen as an asset.
It will be expected that the candidate collaborates with researchers within and outside the Centre, and especially with stakeholders across the Danish maritime sector, including policy makers, non-governmental organizations and industry professionals. We are looking for a researcher who can independently solve quantitative and register research and authority service-based tasks and collaborate with other qualitative researchers at the Centre. The main task is to maintain a large database that we have at the Centre, and keep the database up to date, undertake analyses with international and national partners to provide robust analyses of a given area of focus.
The main activities will include
- Research within the Strategy plan of the Research Unit,
- Teaching and supervision of bachelor, master, and doctoral students (for example, MSc. Or Master courses in Health and Safety, Work environment, Biostatistics or Epidemiology), including Bachelor students at Maritime Academies,
- Writing national and international grant proposals,
- Disseminating research at international and national conferences, including dissemination to the maritime industry, assisting to contribute to the visibility of the CMSS,
- Contributing to activities within The Blue Denmark (the Danish maritime industry), including the Danish Maritime Alliance (MRA),
- Building collaborations with researchers from other SDU departments covering a wide range of health domains,
- Contributing to a positive research environment at the Centre.
The position requires the following qualifications
- Research in the fields of health, social science, or psychology, preferably within the maritime domain,
- Experience in and documentation for attracting funds and project management,
- Experience in teaching, supervision, and examination,
- Experience in dissemination of research, nationally and internationally, including within the maritime domain,
- Expertise and an adequate track record in publications and research or related research topics listed above,
- Experience with research and authority services within health,
- Experience with register data and statistical analysis (in SAS, R or STATA),
- Experience with developing and analyzing large data sets,
- Strong analytical skills and written skills,
- Mastering Danish or a Scandinavian language is preferred,
- A relevant PhD degree,
- A network of relevant international collaborators, possibly including maritime collaborations.

Salary and terms of employment
The successful applicant for the position will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).´
