Postdoctoral opportunity in selective visual attention research at SDU

dato

The Department of Psychology, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for a fully funded postdoctoral position in selective visual attention and rhythmic sampling. The position is available for up to 48 months and part of a project supported by the Lundbeck Foundation led by Professor Søren Krogh Andersen. The starting date is March 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Research environment

The postdoc will be affiliated with the Research Unit of Health and Cognitive Psychology. Another postdoctoral position with partially overlapping characteristics is being advertised for a separate project, and candidates meeting the criteria for both positions are encouraged to apply for both positions separately.

Project description

Our subjective experience of the world is continuous. However, it has been proposed that attention samples the input from our senses in roughly 7-8 discrete ‘snapshots’ per second. This theory is supported by many studies, but theoretical and methodological critiques have been raised, and some researchers have not found supporting evidence. This project will systematically and rigorously test the theory of rhythmic attentional sampling in focused and divided attention in a series of experiments using a combination of electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings of frequency-tagged steady-state visual evoked potentials and behavioral measures in healthy human participants combined with quantitative modelling.

The successful candidate will be required to design, program and conduct EEG-experiments, analyze and interpret EEG and behavioral data and present results at conferences and in journal publications. This project is theoretically and technically sophisticated and a candidate with strong analytic and quantitative skills (programming, digital signal processing, modelling, statistics) is sought.

The project involves collaboration with Prof. Marco Steinhauser (University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Germany) and Dr. Ramakrishna Chakravarthi (University of Aberdeen, UK).

Qualifications

Ideally, applicants for the position should satisfy the following requirements:

  • PhD degree in psychology, cognitive (neuro)science, vision science, or a related field

  • Research experience as evidenced by conference contributions and peer-reviewed journal articles in a field related to the offered position

  • Expertise in visual attention and perception

  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to design, implement, and analyze complex experiments

  • Prior experience with EEG is a plus

  • Prior experience with cognitive modelling is a plus

  • Good command of statistics

  • Good command of Matlab (or similar programming languages)

  • Very good command of the English language in spoken and written form

  • Some knowledge of the Danish language is a plus

Candidates who are about to obtain these qualifications are also encouraged to apply.
