The Software Engineering section at the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute, University of Southern Denmark (SDU Odense Campus) invites applications for a 12-month full time postdoc position with the possibility of extension for the project Fast and Efficient Robotic Automation via Re-Use of Data (FERA). The start date is expected to be 1 July 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter and will be agreed upon with the successful candidate.

We seek candidates with relevant background experience who are interested in applying and exploring software technologies in relation to robotic programming.  

The successful applicant will conduct R&D on machine-learning based annotation of robotic data for reuse. Topics of particular interest include but are not limited to: 

  • Software engineering of robotic systems
  • Machine-learning for robotic data including computer vision
  • Semantic data and world models for robotics.

SDU Software Engineering is part of the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moeller Institute at the Faculty of Engineering in Odense. The Software Engineering section aims at developing and disseminating effective and efficient methods to support high quality and rapid software development of complex and safety-critical systems.

SDU Software Engineering collaborates intensively with industry, and it is expected that a large part of the research is in collaboration with companies across various domains as well the Center of Industrial Software (CIS at SDU Sønderborg campus).

Key responsibilities of the postdoc include:

  • Conducting scientific research and publishing results in high quality scientific conferences/journals.
  • Participating actively in research coordination meetings and dissemination activities.
  • Contributing to the project deliverables and software tool development.
  • Participating in the teaching and supervision in the Software Engineering Section.

Qualification and requirements

  • PhD degree in computer science/software engineering or related areas.
  • Research expertise with background in at least one of the following areas:  Software Engineering for robotic systems, ML/AI, and willingness to enhance knowledge in several of the listed areas.
  • Proficiency in programming.
  • Strong communication skills and teamwork capabilities.
  • Independence to lead an original line of research.
  • English language fluency in both speaking and writing. Some teaching activities will require fluency in Danish.

Application procedure

Before applying the candidates are expected to read the SDU information on how to apply and specific faculty information for application at the Faculty of Engineering.                     

The application shall include the following documents in English: 

  • Motivated letter emphasizing your specific interest and motivation to apply for the specific postdoc position. Please elaborate how your experience and background fit the corresponding position.
  • Research plan describing your approach to the above project (max. 1 page, excluding references).
  • Curriculum Vitae, including your educational background, a list of publications, awards, working experience, and contact details for 3 references. 
  • Certificates/Diplomas (PhD degree, Master’s and Bachelor – combined as one PDF files) – Danish and/or English transcripts including grades from your previous university studies.
  • An official document describing the educational structure and the grading scheme of the awarding universities.
  • 3 publications most relevant to the position. Please attach as one PDF-file for each publication (only full text publications (i.e. no links) can form the basis for assessment of the application).

Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee. Shortlisting may be applied. Only shortlisted candidates will receive a written assessment. Read about shortlisting at SDU.

Conditions of employment

Appointment as postdoctoral researcher is temporary and for an initial 12-year period.

Employment as a postdoc requires scientific qualifications at PhD level at the time of employment. 

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Further information on salary and taxation.

  • According to the University of Southern Denmark’s internal guidelines, there must be at least three qualified applicants to a position before it can be filled.
