The Department of Technology and Innovation (ITI), Faculty of Engineering (TEK) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites candidates to apply for a 3-year fully-funded PhD position in the section SDU Innovation and Design Engineering (IDE). The PhD position is within the research group in Circular Economies and Innovation.
Project context
The research is a part-project in the MADE research platform. The vision is to design an architecture for a data-driven approach to map the end-of-life opportunities for moulds manufacturing. A such data-driven support tool aims to enable operators to inspect how the factory is performing on circularity perspectives, such as science-based targets (scope 3) to support a manufacturer in reducing their material CO2 footprint – including reuse, recycling and design for disassembly.
The partners in the project are: SDU Design Engineering’s research group in Circular Economies and Innovation, SDU Robotics, and the LEGO Group.
Job description
The focus of the PhD candidate’s research is from a factory and value-chain perspective to develop a dynamic data-driven tool on moulds manufacturing enabling the company to investigate the potential from circulating mould materials and products within the facility and through its value chain.
The candidate will gain expert knowledge in moulds manufacturing and circular economy.
The position is available from 1 February. Place of work is SDU Campus Odense with some traveling to Billund.
Qualifications
The successful candidate holds a Master of Science degree within the engineering science discipline; Such as design engineering or engineer in innovation and product development. The preferred candidate has a strong interest in advanced product modelling, circular economy, and competencies within application of life cycle assessment data for deriving decision support relevant for industry and/or academia.
Qualification required:
- A Master of Science degree in integrated design engineering, engineering product development and innovation or similar (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) in a field relevant/close to the core topic of the PhD job posting.
- A strong motivation in circular economy and capacity to develop the theories and methodologies.
- A strong interest in moulds manufacturing, modularization and platform design, and robotics
- Experience in digital advanced product modelling using CAD design and simulations
- Experience with material science of plastic and metals
- A strong motivation in collaborative projects within academia and industry
- Knowledge of modularization and platform design
- Danish language at proficiency level is a requirement due to local partners.
- English at proficiency level or proven from a Master level degree programme in English.
Supplementary qualifications include:
- Specialized understanding of product development, quality testing and design engineering and innovation
- Knowledge within green engineering principles, eco-design and cradle to cradle
- Experience in online material libraries and open LCA-data for CO2 calculations
