A PhD student position is available in the Algae Synthetic Biology Lab, led by Associate Prof. Michele Fabris, in the Department of Green Technology (IGT). The position will be open from 1 August 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter, for a three-year duration. The PhD project will focus on diatoms, a group of microalgae known for their ecological impact and biotechnological applications. The research will investigate fundamental and applied aspects of diatom molecular biology. The candidate will work on elucidating the genetic basis of diatom and bacteria relationships using advanced synthetic biology and microscopy tools.

The PhD student will join a vibrant, diverse, and international research group and will have the opportunity to develop teaching and undergraduate student co-supervision skills.

The Algae Synthetic Biology Lab is part of SDU Biotechnology, a multidisciplinary research division within IGT dedicated to developing innovative, sustainable solutions from biological systems to provide food, feed, chemicals, and renewable energy. The SDU Biotechnology research section is distinguished by collaborative, international, and interdisciplinary research and hosts world-class super-resolution microscopy facilities and expertise, with direct access to SDU’s cutting-edge flow cytometry and metabolomics facilities.

The successful candidate has:

  • A master’s degree within molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, biotechnology, bioengineering or related fields. 
  • Strong drive and motivation to carry out curiosity- and hypothesis-driven research.
  • Strong interest in microbiology and algae biotechnology.
  • Prior experience in molecular biology and molecular microbiology techniques.
  • Familiarity with analytical chemistry techniques (GC-MS, LC-MS, HPLC).
  • Capacity to work independently and in a team.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English.

Application procedure

The application must be in English and include the following:

  • Motivated application. 
  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae.
  • Verified copies of the official bachelor diploma and master's diploma and transcripts of exams, both the original documents and in professional English translation.

  • An official document describing the grading scheme of the awarding universities (if not Danish). 
  • Only for applicants from programmes that evaluate thesis/examination project by approved/not approved: Please submit an official and verified written assessment of the thesis or dissertation project from the grade giving institution. The statement must clearly state that the candidate has been among the top 30 pct. in the graduation class for the study programme.

Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee or an expert. Shortlisting may be applied. Only shortlisted candidates will receive a written assessment. Read about shortlisting at SDU.

Conditions of employment

Appointment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. 

Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission. Employment and enrollment will cease without further notice at the end of the period. A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.

Employment as a PhD fellow governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Further information about salary and conditions of employment. 

The successful candidate will be enrolled at SDU in accordance with Faculty regulations and the Danish Ministerial Order on the PhD Programme at the Universities (PhD order)
