The vacant position is a combined position as a clinical professor in clinical pharmacology at the Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark, Esbjerg (IRS SDU, Esbjerg), and as a consultant at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Odense University Hospital (OUH), with duties at University Hospital of Southern Denmark, Esbjerg. The time is allocated as follows: 

  • 50 % Clinical professor – at IRS SDU, Esbjerg
  • 40 % Consultant – at OUH
  • 10 % Consultant – at Esbjerg Hospital

The position is for a 5-year period with the possibility of extension.

The academic position

The clinical professor will be appointed at Department of Regional Health Research, Faculty of Health Sciences, SDU, Esbjerg. The position will be within clinical pharmacology, and focus areas could include, yet are not limited to 1) establishing and developing clinical pharmacology research at Esbjerg Hospital, 2) promoting and extending rational clinical pharmacology to medical specialties at Esbjerg Hospital, and 3) teaching medical students in Esbjerg.

Areas of responsibility

The clinical professor will be responsible for developing research in clinical pharmacology and the medical specialities. The clinical professor will also be responsible for developing new strategies for collaboration with other key stakeholders broadly in the areas of medicine and public healthcare.

Additionally, the clinical professor will be expected to teach and mentor post-docs, PhD-students, and undergraduate students, as well as to maintain and develop national and international contacts and secure funding. Participation in assessment work is part of the position. Moreover, profiling this research area in the public eye will be an important task. The professor will be expected to participate in the teaching and instruction on the master’s programme in Medicine in Esbjerg. Other responsibilities can include participating to scientific boards and commissions, editorial tasks, censoring tasks, and peer reviewing.

Research activity, network and collaboration

The clinical professor will be expected to establish collaboration with other researchers at Esbjerg Hospital, OUH and SDU. The professor should participate in furthering the scientific development of the field both nationally and internationally. 

The clinical position

The clinician will be appointed as consultant at Department of Clinical Pharmacology (Farmakologi), OUH. The consultant must fulfil the requirements and responsibilities of a consultant at this department.

Qualifications

The applicant must be qualified as a consultant clinical pharmacologist with a strong track record within Drug information Service, Danish hospital drug committee system (local, regional, national), drug-use monitoring, and clinical pharmacology stewardship tasks. The applicant must also be qualified with a strong research profile in clinical pharmacology. Commitment to teaching and the ability to lead a research group, including experience with attaining funding and supervision of master’s students, PhD students are required. Emphasis will be on the applicant´s ability to document original scientific production at an international level within the area of clinical pharmacology.

Furthermore, the candidate must have a successful record in obtaining research funding, in practice experience with international research collaboration, and effective oral, written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Documented experience as research leader, head of teaching and other administrative jobs will be an advantage. The applicant will be expected to be qualified in academic teaching as an associate professor or equivalent. Danish language skills are not required initially, however, should be mastered within the first 2 years of employment. 

Employers

The department is the only Clinical Pharmacology department in the region (RSYD). It provides services to OUH, Esbjerg Hospital, and the region. Some services are also provided on a national level. The department provides services in all subspecialties except acute toxicology.
The medical staff comprises approximately 5 consultants, 3 senior registrars, and 4-5 junior doctors and one pharmacist. 2 consultants are professor/clinical professors. The department is managed by Chief physician Mette Marie H Christensen.

The department also has a research unit. The applicant will be member of this unit, but does not refer to it or its leader.

Odense University Hospital (OUH) and University Hospital of Southern Denmark, Esbjerg 

OUH is one of Denmark’s largest hospitals and the only one having all medical specialties collected under one roof. In total, the staff comprises about 11,000 people. A new university hospital is currently in the planning stage to be finished in 2025/2026. The new hospital will be located adjacent to the current main campus of the University of Southern Denmark. This co-location of the two institutions is unique in Europe and will facilitate the cooperation between the clinical departments and faculties of the University of Southern Denmark.

Esbjerg Hospital includes almost all medical specialties. In total the staff comprises more than 3,000 people. The hospital recently initiated a teaching programme for a master degree in medicine. In 2015 a clinical pharmacology function was established in collaboration with Clinical Pharmacology, OUH. This function is currently located at the Hospital Pharmacy.

Faculty of Health Sciences

The Faculty of Health Science is one of five faculties at the University of Southern Denmark. The faculty offers a grand variety of bachelor- and master’s programs.

Department of Regional Health Research

Department of Regional Health Research is a network of research environments and teaching activities anchored at SDU and 12 different hospitals in Region of Southern Denmark, Region Zealand and the Capital Region of Denmark. Department of Regional Health Research is the university framework for the research and education carried out at the county hospitals. The focus of Department of Regional Health Research, Region of Southern, and Region Zealand is on cooperating to create best possible conditions for research and education.

Salary and terms of employment

The successful applicant for the clinical professor position will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
